When was the hero siegfried sassoon written
The thing I liked the most is I understood the story, so moving and almost tear drawing. Some metered poems the meter trumps and drowns out the story, well, not here. This Hero shined. Elwood Short - This moved me to tears. A mixture of grief, anger and sympathy. Petter Finne - This is the most powerful use of poetry - as a means to convey unpalatable social comment to others.
All you pretentious authors out there, writing disjointed, dyslexic prose and calling it poetry - take note on Apr 09 AM PST x edit. Hank Ferragudo - Haha, the "disjointed, dyslexic" authors just aren't interested in conforming their ideas to the scheme, as virtually all rhymers do whether by force of instilled habit or laziness. What strikes to the heart and reveals a truth or awakens you in a new way, these things are some of the doorways to art.
I don't mean to diminish the power of classical styles, but at the same time, I do not agree with tossing all modern poets, such as Wallace Stevens, Gary Snyder, on the trash heap for not following what was done in the past.
Peace, Tom B. Petter Finne - It's not poetry - although it might be fine prose or even poetic prose. Whenever I write from the heart and I have many years of publishing under my belt I classify it as prose.
Otherwise, it's like estate agents calling a terraced house a villa. Seasinger - Excellent comment! To which may be added that the powerful effect of this poem is not due just to its regular rhythm and rhyme.
It is due to those qualities being combined with Sassoon's phrase-making ability and his superb ear for vocabulary. In every line, the images, phrases and word choices impress as being exactly right for the purpose. Another poetic quality that is not an easy thing to do. Fervency Osagie - beautiful write. I love poetry that tells story and adds a bit of philosophy to it.
Penhoek - I fyou had lived through that war as Siegfried had done, you would not stand for poetic window dressing too. Simple, straightforward, yet vivid. Anit - i really like the simplicity lucid as a peice of cake..
Luke Shires - Amazing. T, a person whom I keep a picture of for inspiration hanging directly over me as i sleep, keeping me safe from the vampires that reside within the confines of my closet. I-Like-Rhymes - As you may have gathered from the notes and comments this poem was written during the World War by a serving officer and is about the sad duty of many officers at that time of notifying the families of soldiers who had been killed in that war.
Whatever type of soldier the man had been it was common practice to make out he was a hero and this, in part is the theme here. It also takes a swipe at the Army top-brass who didn't seem to care about the cannon-fodder infantrymen who were the main casualties. This was written and widly publicised to try and stop more people dying needlessly by telling some of the truth about what was happening.

Still, who would have known really what these men went through. I-Like-Rhymes - Thanks for pointing out my error. Scraps n scribbles - The differences between reality and ritual. Sometimes they mean nothing, at others everything. Poetry has the power to make you a more wonderful person - drink it in, babe!
Violet Flowers - Honestly I'm not a big fan of war. Danny Beatty - Siegfried Sassoon is my first love in poetry I-Like-Rhymes - I believe there is something of hope in this piece as well.
I really love. The vivid imagery and the way you explain the pain and sadness the soldiers and the mothers carried. Carole - well written!! LiquidNitrogen - I found this poem very intriguing, though I am not a huge fan of soldiers and what-not.
Il uv it sooooooo Much Von Powell - Look in the 'War' category. I hope you find what you are looking for. I-Like-Rhymes - It was customary for the Brother officer to be of approximately the same rank whereever possible. It is certainly not a religuous use of the word brother but is based on the phrase "brothers in arms" used of fighting men.
I-Like-Rhymes - It is my personal opinion that all poets initially write for an audience of 1; themsleves. Sassoon was a soldier and returned to the front even when he had the chance not to do so after Craiglockhart. In those later days of the war at the time when this was written he was anti-government as can be seen in the poet page notes on this site.
So perhaps the secondary audience for this piece was the political heiracrchy who he believed were continuing the war needlessly. Even though this guy didn't save anyones life or drag someone out of the trench, he was there and who can blame him for being scared? The point of the poem isn't about whether he was a hero or not, its about a woman's young child dying in a horibble way, none of you could ever imagine. Lesson Plans. Resources for Teachers. There will be rain-wet roses; stir of wings; And down the wood a thrush that wakes and sings. Not from the past you'll come, but from that deep Where beauty murmurs to the soul asleep: And I shall know the sense of life re-born From dreams into the mystery of morn Where gloom and brightness meet.
Siegfried Sassoon Autumn October's bellowing anger breaks and cleaves The bronzed battalions of the stricken wood In whose lament I hear a voice that grieves For battle's fruitless harvest, and the feud Of outraged men. Repression of War Experience Now light the candles; one; two; there's a moth; What silly beggars they are to blunder in And scorch their wings with glory, liquid flame— No, no, not that,—it's bad to think of war, When thoughts you've gagged all day come back to scare you; And it's been proved that soldiers don't go mad Unless they lose control of ugly thoughts That drive them out to jabber among the trees.
