How is soul different from spirit

Each soul is potentially divine according to the monist. Realization of soul puts an end to the transmigration of life. Soul is used only in the sense of good. This only shows that the word soul has everything good about it.

It possesses virtues and not vices. Also, the word soul is not used to refer to supernatural beings. This shows that the word soul is used in the philosophical sense.

Someone who lives according to the soul is always in unrest with regard to what other people think and say about him. Through my spirit I am in contact with God. However, when I am soulish I live according to my understanding, my senses, which are earthly , and my body is used to serve this world.

Then my spirit is also filled with that which is of this world, with the result that I have little or no contact with God. Salvation in Christ is meant to change this relationship so that I become spiritual and heavenly instead of soulish and earthly. The result is a life of faith instead of a life according to my human understanding. The intention is that our spirit is to be made alive so that God can speak to us; we should live for Him and for the heavenly things.

Then we find rest for our souls. The heavenly things are eternal and unchangeable. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. It pierces and divides between soul and spirit and discerns the thoughts and counsels of the heart. Thankfully, God has offered a way of salvation for those whose souls are doomed to die. Matthew : "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

We cannot allow ourselves to get distracted by the things of this earth. Our soul, after all, cannot take its possessions on earth with it to the afterlife. It would be folly to strive to gain the whole world on account of losing one's soul. One soul's destination is of utmost importance and should be the number one priority in a person's life. The soul is basically our mind, our emotions, and our will. It is who we are as human beings. But it is also used to express God.

In this verse, we can see that Mary uses her soul to glorify God and then uses the spirit to rejoice in what God has done to save her. Glorifying God is a human behavior and human responsibility.

We express our humanity to God through our soul, and we magnify His power and presence through our soul. We can do good works and be godly and still fall short. Let us go back to Luke This means that she enjoyed and experienced God through her spirit. While the soul is the source of our expression through our humanity, it has its limitations and the only way we can experience God is through our spirit. God created us with these faculties so we can express Him.

To magnify means to enlarge, or express, something hidden for all to see. Note 1 on verse 47 in the New Testament Recovery Version explains:. Her praise to God issued from her spirit and was expressed through her soul.

Her spirit was filled with joy in God her Savior, and her soul manifested that joy for the magnifying of the Lord. She lived and acted in her spirit, which directed her soul. So the function of our spirit is to contact God and receive God, and the function of our soul is to express God. We believers have the divine life in our spirit. Now God wants us to live and act not by ourselves, that is, by our soul, but by His life in our spirit. Our mind is educated in school, and we actively live according to what we think.

We also experience the wide range of human emotions, and we often respond to situations and matters according to how we feel. Based on what we think or feel, we make decisions with our will.
